Overview

This is the fourth session in an eight-part educational series that focuses on standardized screening, evaluation, and disease management of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. This course covers life planning throughout disease stages, assessing and assisting caregivers, enhancing communications, utilizing community resources, and end-of-life decision-making. It addresses sensitive conversations with patients, families, and caregivers.

Learning outcome Statement: Learners will demonstrate increased knowledge regarding the stages of dementia, how to prepare and educate caregivers, and how to assess caregivers for stress and burden by scoring 80% or higher on the post-test.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes apply to all professions.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Engage in advanced care planning conversations with dementia patients and their families early in disease progress and make referrals as appropriate.
  2. Direct patients, caregivers, and clinicians to the appropriate dementia care resources.
  3. Address family caregivers' stress, burden, and concerns.
  4. Advise caregivers on late-stage dementia tips, such as de-prescribing various medications or avoiding use of feeding tubes.

Accreditation
The Doctors Company is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical educational activities for physicians.
