Patient Termination - Activity ID 3322

This brief audio presentation will give healthcare providers information on how to mitigate their risk when terminating a patient relationship. The key topics covered include establishing patient expectations, what to do when expectations aren’t being met, special circumstances to consider prior to termination, and finally, the elements of the termination notice.

Learning Outcome Statement: Learners will report their intention to implement at least one strategy that mitigates risk when terminating a patient relationship within 60 days of completing this program.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must complete a program evaluation.

The following Learning Objectives are applicable for all professions.

1. Draft a comprehensive document clarifying the expectations patients can have from their healthcare practice, as well as the expectations their practice holds for its patients.
2. Design and implement a template for a patient termination letter that encompasses essential components including providing the 30-day notice, explaining the process for handling copies of medical records, and offering referrals to alternate healthcare providers.
3. Revise and update the policies of their organization to establish clear guidelines on the steps for terminating a patient including addressing the necessary documentation and communication protocols involved in the process.
