Overview

This course provides an orientation to the basic requirements of the Breach Notification Rules, within the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  It covers how HIPAA defines a breach, breach exceptions, and provides guidance on the notification processes in the event that there is a breach.  Some of the common causes of HIPAA Breaches, including phishing, ransomware, and human error, are described and addressed. Proactive measures to promote the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI) including risk assessments will be reviewed.  A comprehensive list of resources useful for providers and practices, and staff training, is provided. 

Learning Objectives/Outcomes apply to all professions.

Learning Outcome Statement: Upon completing this program, 75% of participants will pass the post-test with a score of at least 75%, demonstrating increased knowledge of HIPAA breach notification, rules, and reporting.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners will score 75% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, you will be able to:

  1. Conduct meaningful risk assessments to identify areas of vulnerability that could cause breaches.
  2. Design strategies to minimize common causes of HIPAA breaches.
  3. Utilize checklists to evaluate compliance with the HIPAA regulations, such as the HIPAA Checklist or the Security Assessment Tool
  4. Create and maintain HIPAA compliance policies for your practice
