Overview

This course provides an orientation to the basic requirements of the Breach Notification Rules, within the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  HIPAA gives patients many rights with respect to the privacy and security of their health information. It covers how HIPAA defines a breach, breach exceptions, and provides guidance on the notification processes in the event that there is a breach.  Some of the common causes of HIPAA Breaches, including phishing, ransomware, and human error, are described and addressed. Proactive measures to promote the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI) including risk assessments will be reviewed.  A comprehensive list of resources useful for providers and practices, and staff training, is provided.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes apply to all professions.

Learning Objective: Learners will demonstrate their knowledge regarding HIPAA breach risks and strategies for prevention by scoring 80% or higher on the post test.
