Overview

A panel of dementia specialists will provide up-to-date information on new disease-modifying medications receiving FDA approval, but with specific candidate criteria. Practitioners will learn how these medications work, which of their patients may receive benefit, how to identify and address risks, and how to effectively communicate with patients and family members.

Learning Outcome Statement: Learners will demonstrate an increase in knowledge of newly FDA-approved dementia medications, treatment protocols, appropriate referrals, and effective communication skills to discuss the risks and benefits with patients and caregivers by scoring 80% or higher on a post-test.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners will score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Prioritize which patients may qualify for these medications and make appropriate referrals to specialists who can prescribe and monitor.
  2. Effectively communicate to patients and caregivers why they may not be appropriate for medications, and what the risks and benefits may be.
  3. Evaluate new disease modifying medications and specific criteria for testing and referral, risks and potential benefits approved by the FDA.
