Overview

Diagnostic process failure resulting in delayed, wrong, or missed diagnoses has been identified as a serious and often preventable harm in healthcare. Diagnostic failures frequently result in poor patient outcomes, including high-severity injuries or death. High-injury diagnostic failures were identified in over one-third of U.S. malpractice claims. The number of practicing nurse practitioners (NPs) is expanding to meet increased patient demands. To prevent diagnostic error, NPs should be aware of the most misdiagnosed conditions and understand the risks associated with cognitive bias. NPs need to understand the value of closed-loop communication, creating systems that ensure patients complete their tests, appointments, and consults.

Learning Outcome Statement:  *80% of larners will demonstrate an increase in knowledge related to contributing factors to diagnostic errors and how to prevent them by scoring 80% or higher on a post-test.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Learning Objectives apply to all professions.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply understanding of the 12-step diagnostic process of care framework and determine where contributing factors exist in their primary practice setting to effectively recognize and implement appropriate improvement strategies for advanced practice clinicians.
  2. Identify the top five areas of concern in the diagnostic framework and promote awareness within their practice to select and implement effective improvement strategies.
  3. Identify and implement improvement strategies for advanced practice clinicians in their practice to decrease the risk of diagnostic error in a primary care setting.
