Overview

Healthcare practitioners, including physicians, dentists, and advanced practice clinicians, need to understand the roles of their professional licensing board and state and federal agencies to protect the public. Administrative licensing boards determine competence to practice in the state and requirements to maintain licensure. The boards also investigate complaints made by the public against practitioners. State and federal regulatory agencies monitor continuing compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. By reviewing the common types of complaints and practice allegations, practitioners can maintain good standing with their professional licensing board and avoid investigations by regulatory agencies.

Learning objectives apply to all professions.

Learning Outcome Statement: 80% of learners will demonstrate their understanding of the role of professional licensing board and state and federal agencies play in addressing common types of complaints and practice allegations by scoring at least 80% on a post-test.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Integrate my state board's requirements to maintain compliance with professional licensing.
  2. Teach my practice staff to bring any notifications from administrative or regulatory agencies to my immediate attention.
  3. Consult with my professional liability carrier before responding to any administrative or regulatory investigations.
