Overview

The Doctors Company has identified patient assessment issues and communication failure between providers as key contributors to malpractice claims.  This dental case study describes how inadequate patient history-taking and poor communication can lead to an adverse patient outcome.  The lessons learned in this course are applicable to all healthcare providers for preventing adverse events and avoiding malpractice claims.

Learning Outcome Statement: 80% of all participants will indicate an intent to make at least one change in practice related to the review of the medical history as a result of attending this program.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Objectives
After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Establish a process for reviewing patient records, including patient history, at the initial visit and subsequent encounters.
  2. Explore underlying reasons why a patient may not provide a complete medical history and address barriers by implementing communication strategies.
  3. Evaluate key communication issues between providers during transition of care that can lead to poor patient outcomes.
  4. Assess my documentation methods for informed consent and implement new strategies to ensure all elements of informed consent are adequately documented.
