In reviewing closed malpractice claims, The Doctors Company has found an increased risk of claims in patients who undergo office based dermatologic procedures and take direct acting oral anticoagulants. This case study highlights the factors contributing to the improper management of these patients, including errors in clinical judgment, anticoagulant management, and communication.

Learning Outcome Statement: 80% of learners will demonstrate increased knowledge for evaluating the risk of interrupting treatment of direct acting anticoagulants by scoring 80% or higher on a post-test.

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on a post-test and complete a program evaluation.

1. Identify the clinical indications, benefits, and limitations of direct acting oral anticoagulants.
2. Calculate the maximum dose of the local anesthetic lidocaine with epinephrine for an adult and identify signs of Lidocaine toxicity.
3. Detect factors that influence drug metabolism and select lab tests for monitoring.
4. Predict the time in hours for safely stopping and restarting these drugs.
5. Recommend ways to improve communication between patients and providers.
