Dental injury claims continue to make up almost a quarter of all anesthesiology claims (22 percent) with over 30 percent of tooth damage claims resulting in indemnity payments to the plaintiff. Due to the frequent occurrence of dental injury claims, anesthesia professionals must be aware of dental injury causes, preventive measures, and steps to take if injury occurs.

This program includes a post-test and evaluation. A score of 80% must be obtained to pass the post-test. The post-test and evaluation must be completed to receive credit and a certificate.

Learning Objectives apply to all professions. 

Learning Outcome Statement: Learners will demonstrate knowledge of risk factors, preventive actions, and the elements of a thorough pre-anesthetic assessment by obtaining a score of 80% or higher on the post-test.

1. Recognize intraoperative and postoperative causes of dental injury.
2. Apply two strategies to reduce the occurrence of dental injury.
3. Identify methods to improve preanesthetic examination and documentation.
