Reducing the Risk of a Malpractice Claim - Activity ID 3286

This program presents cases and data from TDC closed malpractice claims and highlights specific issues that may increase the risk for medical and dental errors, patient harm, and malpractice claims. The cases allow the learner to use critical thinking in drilling down to the factors leading to the injury while determining actions that can be implemented to minimize future harm. In addition, the program offers best practices and risk mitigation strategies that can be applied in your own practice setting to enhance patient safety, decrease unfavorable patient outcomes, and reduce the risk of a malpractice claim. 

To obtain credit and a certificate of completion, learners must score 80% or higher on the post-test and complete a program evaluation.

Learning Outcome Statement: 80% of learners will demonstrate increased knowledge of the RCA2 methods to identify the root causes of patient injury by scoring 80% or higher on a post-test.

1. Identify the root causes of actual or potential patient injuries in the healthcare setting.
2. Employ the RCA2 tool to look beyond the apparent cause of a patient's injury.
3. Learn through case examples of other healthcare organizations how conducting an RCA2 can lead to sustainable improvement in patient care.
4. Distinguish how system failures, work conditions, human errors, and environment influence quality outcomes.
